Bishop Trautman was
ordained a priest in 1962 in Austria while studying
under Karl Rahner at the University of Innsbruck.
He spent many years as a seminary professor for the
Diocese of Buffalo. He was ordained a bishop in 1985
and on July 16, 1990, Bishop Trautman was installed
as the Ninth Bishop of Erie in Saint Peter Cathedral.
He has been a member of the following committees of
the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops:
Administrative Board of NCCB, ad hoc Committee for
the Review of Scripture Translations, Doctrine Committee,
Budget and Finance Committee, Pro-Life Committee,
Migration and Refugee Committee, and Communications
Committee. He was elected as the Chairman of the Bishops'
Committee on Liturgy. During his three years of chairing
that committee, he guided the Revised Lectionary and
Revised Sacramentary projects.
